Background
The David Elton Outdoor Fund ("DEOF") was created in 2000 in
memory
of David
Elton, who lost his life in March 2000 attempting to
rescue a fellow hiker from the sea. The Fund is administered
by The
Calgary Foundation with the advice of the DEOF committee.
Vision Outdoor
Safety – We are all responsible.
Mission To be
a catalyst in developing safety
awareness as the primary skill for all involved with youth outdoors.
Goals
- To promote and advocate outdoor safety awareness among
participants - both youth and leaders.
- To promote and advocate the clear understanding of risk
among other stakeholders such as parents, administrators
and educators.
Objectives of The David
Elton Outdoor Fund
- Provide funds for youth leaders to participate in outdoor
safety
training programs, for course development and for improved stakeholder
communication of Risk Issues.
- Continue to promote the video “Outdoor Safety:
We’re All Responsible".
- Initiate activities which promote outdoor safety
and the clear understanding of risk such as:
- Develop a workshop for parents on the safety
issues surrounding informed consent for youth outdoor activities. In
the longer
term develop this as a workshop package which other groups could use.
- Develop a short bulletin on informed consent and safety
tips for outdoor
activities to be published in community newsletters in Calgary.
- Develop partnerships with other groups having similar goals and concerns.
- Continue to initiate and participate in DaveFest.
